For this work, his laboratory exploits biochemical, genetic and cell biological approaches in two model systems, vertebrate epithelial cells and the budding yeast. Bretscher teaches cell biology to graduate students at Cornell University.

One of the world s leading researchers in immune system behavior, Dr.

Ploegh studies the various tactics that viruses employ to evade our immune responses, and the ways in which our immune system distinguishes friend from foe. She is also a member of the National Academy of Sciences. Her laboratory studies the molecular mechanisms that govern chromosome segregation during mitosis and meiosis and the consequences aneuploidy when these mechanisms fail during normal cell proliferation and cancer development.

Amon teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in cell biology and genetics.

Matthew P. He is known for his work in developmental biology and genetics, particularly in areas of cell-cell signaling and homeobox genes and for discovering the roles of developmental regulators in cancer.

Scott teaches cell and developmental biology to undergraduate students, development and disease mechanisms to medical students and developmental biology to graduate students at Stanford University Kelsey Martin is Professor of Biological Chemistry and Psychiatry and interim Dean of the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles.

She is the former Chair of the Biological Chemistry Department Her laboratory studies the ways in which experience changes connections between neurons in the brain to store long-term memories a process known as synaptic plasticity. She has made important contributions to elucidating the molecular and cell biological mechanisms that underlie this process.

Martin teaches basic principles of neuroscience to undergraduates, graduate students, dental students, and medical students. I just finished reading through this gorgeous new edition of MCB. I had tried tackling the 5th edition back in but gave up halfway through.

Trying again, I found the new book to be absolutely fantastic! The writing style is concise, and yes, you do have to concentrate hard to grok the details, but the illustrations are beautiful, plentiful and very helpful in complementing the text.

So many wonderful advances have been made. As a neurologist I read stuff all the time that requires background in MCB type materials of which I had only a weak grasp.

Take the illustration of the biochemistry of Duchenne muscular dystrophy, for example; I understood the role of the dystrophin protein much better afterwards.

I presume this textbook is used mainly for pre-med and med students, and for that purpose I think it is ideal. For an old codger like me, who last really looked at this stuff probably in the s in med school, it was like getting into a time machine and zooming 35 years into the future.

Hardcover Verified download. This is a text book on a very complex, technical subject. I would say it's written a graduate or post-graduate level, so a working knowledge of organic and biochemistry, genetics, and cell biology are prerequisites for fully benefiting from the book. I'm glad I bought the book, in spite of its high price, size, weight, and complexity.

It is clearly written, has excellent illustrations, well-organized, and fairly comprehensive. Her laboratory studies the molecular mechanisms that govern chromosome segregation during mitosis and meiosis and the consequences—aneuploidy—when these mechanisms fail during normal cell proliferation and cancer development.
